Canada New-Brunswick Housing Benefit - Are you eligible?

Applications for the Canada-New Brunswick Housing Benefit opened June 21, 2021.  The benefit is available to New Brunswick low-income working families.  Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicant must live and work in New Brunswick
  • Applicant must be a parent with primary custody of a child or children under 19; or a parent with primary custody of one or more dependents with a disability, 19 or older
  • Applicant is renting where they live
  • Applicant does not already receive a housing subsidy from the Department of Social Development
  • Applicant is working and earns a minimum of $14,200 per year, to a maximum of $38,000 per year, before tax, household income (combined before tax employment income of all adults over 19 living in the same home)
  • Applicants income is reported to Canada Revenue Agency (taxes are filed up to date)
  • Applicant is the only person in the household applying for and receiving this benefit

The average Canada-New Brunswick Housing Benefit amounts are $300 for a two-bedroom apartment in a rural area and $425 for a two-bedroom apartment in an urban area.  For a three-bedroom apartment, the average benefit is $350 for a three-bedroom apartment in a rural area and $475 for a three-bedroom apartment in an urban area.  The preceding figures represent average benefit amounts.  Actual Canada-New Brunswick Housing Benefit amounts are based on your households unique circumstances.

If eligible, applicants may be able to receive the benefit for up to 3 years.  Upon receiving the benefit, a yearly review will be conducted to determine on-going eligibility.  The benefit is non-taxable and will be paid monthly through direct deposit, directly to the successful applicant.  Your landlord does not need to know that you are receiving the benefit.  This benefit is not available to home-owners.  There is no deadline to apply, however, funding is limited and it is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
